Conversational forms
Conversational forms that feel like a conversation, not paperwork
One question per screen, answered with a tap or a key press, in your own design. People finish forms like these, and hootform lets you build them free.
Free forever, with unlimited responses. No credit card.
A long form on one page asks everything at once, and people decide whether to bother before they've read the first question. A conversational form asks one thing at a time. Each step is small, so starting is easy, and once someone has started they tend to finish.
How it works in hootform
- Build it question by question. Pick from 24 question types, from short text to rankings, matrices, contact details, addresses, file uploads and signatures, and order them in the builder. See the builder.
- Make it yours. Give the form your colours, fonts and corners, and a picture or video on any screen. Answer recall brings earlier answers into later questions, so it reads like someone listening: "Thanks, Sam. What's your role?"
- Share it. Send the link, or embed it on your site. Respondents answer with the keyboard (letters for choices, digits for scales, Enter to go on) or by tapping on a phone. A progress bar shows how far they've come.
Why it works better
Every answer is saved the moment it's given. Someone who stops halfway can come back to the same link and carry on, and you can see how far people get. Logic skips what doesn't apply, so each person only sees the questions meant for them. And a welcome screen can say how long the form takes, worked out from its questions, so people know what they're agreeing to.

Questions people ask
What is a conversational form?
A form that asks one question per screen, like a conversation, instead of showing every field at once. It's easier to start and easier to finish, especially on a phone.
Is hootform a free alternative to Typeform?
Yes. hootform builds the same kind of one-question-at-a-time forms, with unlimited responses on the free plan. See hootform vs Typeform.
Do respondents need an account?
No. Anyone with the link can answer, on any device, without signing in.
Can I still show several questions on one screen?
Yes. Set a form's Layout to All questions on one page and it shows every question at once, with one Submit button, like a paper form. Logic, answer recall and saving as people answer all work the same way. One question at a time stays the default, because it's what makes people finish. See layout.
To keep one screen at a time but ask a few related questions together, such as the details of a trip, put them in a question group: the group is one step with one button, and the rest of the form still moves one question at a time.
More features
- Conditional logic Add conditional logic to any form: skip questions, branch on any answer or hidden field, recall answers, and finish on different endings. Free.
- Quiz maker Make a scored quiz online: points per answer, a result screen that shows the score, and a different ending for each score band. Free, with unlimited responses.
- Multi-step forms Build multi-step forms that save every answer as it's given, so people can stop and resume, and you can see exactly where they stopped. Free.
- File upload forms Let people attach CVs, photos, screenshots and documents to any form. Files are stored with each response and encrypted at rest. Free up to 10 MB a file.
- E-signature forms Collect signatures on any form, drawn with a finger or a mouse, with consent checkboxes that record the exact wording agreed to. Free, and encrypted at rest.
- Encrypted forms hootform encrypts identifying answers and files at rest with a key per form, on by default and free. Delete a form and its responses can never be read again.
