How they differ
Why people look for a Qualtrics alternative
Qualtrics is a serious research platform, with advanced statistics, panels, text analysis and methodology tools that academic and market research teams rely on. Most surveys don't need that. When we checked, Qualtrics' free account allowed a few active surveys, a limited number of questions in each, and listed a limit of 500 responses. Its paid research plan was sold by the year.
For customer feedback, employee pulse checks, event surveys and product research, hootform covers what you need. The free plan has unlimited surveys and unlimited responses, and Premium is $19 a month for the whole organization.
What you get with hootform
- Unlimited surveys and responses on every plan.
- Logic on any question or hidden field, with several endings.
- One question at a time, with every answer saved as it's given, so drop-off is real, not guessed.
- Insights on every plan: views, starts, completion rate and median time to finish. Premium adds breakdowns per answer and drop-off per question.
- AI follow-ups that ask "why?" on a vague answer, and AI insights that summarise free text with checked quotes, on Premium.
Research platform or survey tool
A research platform earns its price when the analysis is the product: weighting, significance testing and panels of respondents you pay to reach. A survey tool earns its keep when you already know who to ask and need them to finish. That's where one question at a time, logic and follow-ups matter most, and where hootform is built to help.
A worked example
An HR team runs a quarterly pulse survey for 400 people. A free Qualtrics account lists 500 responses, so the second quarter would already be past it. On hootform's free plan, every quarter's responses are collected, and three people can share the work on Premium, at $19 a month.
Switching from Qualtrics
There's no importer, so rebuild each survey, starting from a template such as the employee pulse survey or the NPS survey. Standard question types have direct equivalents, including scales, rankings and matrices. Advanced research features, such as panels, quotas and statistical analysis, don't.
Where Qualtrics fits better
- You run academic or market research that needs advanced statistics, text analysis and survey methodology tools.
- Your organization already has a Qualtrics licence and a research team trained on it.
