How they differ
Why people look for a Google Forms alternative
Google Forms is free, familiar and good enough for a lot of things. People move on when the form is going to someone outside the company, and it has to look like theirs rather than Google's, or when they need logic that goes past "go to a section".
hootform is free too, with unlimited responses. What changes is the form itself. It shows one question at a time, or every question on one page if you'd rather keep the Google Forms feel, in your colours and fonts, with a picture or video on any screen. Logic can jump forward from any question type, not only multiple choice and dropdowns, and answers can be recalled in later questions, as in "Thanks, Sam. What's your role?". Respondents never need a Google account, including to upload a file.
What you get that Google Forms doesn't have
- Logic on every question type. Branch on a rating, a number, a date, a yes/no, or a hidden field from the link. See logic.
- Answers saved as they're given, so you can see where people drop off, and a respondent can come back and finish.
- File uploads without a Google sign-in. Respondents attach files without an account, and the files can be encrypted at rest.
- Several endings and redirects, so different answers can finish on different screens or send people to different pages.
A worked example
A school collects about 500 course evaluations a term. On Google Forms that's free. On hootform it's free too, with every response. The difference is what the students see: one question at a time on a phone, a rating grid that doesn't need zooming, and a follow-up only for the people who said they didn't feel confident. That follow-up is written by the teacher and needs Premium. The course evaluation template is built this way.
Switching from Google Forms
There's no importer, so rebuild each form, starting from a template if one is close. Short answer, paragraph, multiple choice, checkboxes, dropdowns, linear scales, grids, dates and times all have direct equivalents. Responses land in hootform's own table and CSV export, and if you're used to a linked sheet, connect Google Sheets and each response is added to a spreadsheet as it arrives.
Where Google Forms fits better
- Everyone answering is inside your Google Workspace, and you want answers to land in Sheets with no setup at all.
- It's a quick internal poll where how the form looks doesn't matter.
- You need respondents to upload files straight into your Google Drive.

Questions people ask
Is hootform free like Google Forms?
Yes. The free plan has unlimited forms and unlimited responses, with every question type. Premium adds things like AI follow-ups and removing the hootform badge.
Do respondents need a Google account?
No. Nobody needs an account to answer a hootform, including to upload a file.
Can hootform send responses to Google Sheets?
Yes, on every plan. Connect a Google account once, choose Create a spreadsheet in the form's settings, and each completed response is added as a row as it arrives. See Google Sheets.
Can hootform put every question on one page, like Google Forms?
Yes. Set the form's Layout to All questions on one page. Logic still shows and hides questions as people answer, and every answer is saved as it's given, so you still see where people stop. See layout.
Can I keep my Google Forms responses?
Yes. They stay in your Google Forms account and linked sheet. hootform doesn't need or touch them.
