hootform vs Tally
A Tally alternative for one-question-at-a-time forms
Both are free with unlimited responses. The difference is how a form feels to fill in: hootform asks one question at a time and saves every answer as it's given.

How they differ
Why people compare hootform and Tally
Tally and hootform agree on the big thing: neither meters responses, and both give you logic, file uploads and hidden fields on the free plan. If you're choosing between them, you're choosing between two ways of building and two ways of asking.
Tally builds like a document. You type questions onto a page, and respondents usually see several questions at once. hootform asks one question at a time. Each screen is a single question, answered with a key press or a tap. Conversational forms tend to feel lighter on a phone. And because each answer is saved the moment it's given, you see exactly where people drop off, and respondents can come back to finish.
What you get with hootform
- Premium for the whole organization at $19 a month, with everyone included.
- Encryption at rest per form for identifying answers and files. See encryption.
- AI follow-ups that ask one more question when an answer is vague, and AI insights that summarise your latest responses with quotes checked against the real answers. Both are Premium.
- Answer recall and several endings, with logic drawn as a map you can edit.
A worked example
A team of three wants a feedback form with the badge removed. On Tally that's the Pro plan, which comes with unlimited team members. On hootform it's Premium, at $19 a month. Both would collect every response. For one person who doesn't mind the badge, either free plan costs nothing. The calculator above works it out for your own numbers.
Switching from Tally
There's no importer yet, so switching means rebuilding each form, often from a template. Question types, logic, hidden fields and answer recall all have direct equivalents, and responses land in hootform's own table and CSV export. Keep your Tally submissions where they are, or export them before you close the account.
Where Tally fits better
- You like writing a form the way you write a document, typing questions straight onto the page.
- You want to collect payments or build calculated quotes on the free plan.
- You want native Notion and Airtable integrations without a webhook.

Questions people ask
Are both Tally and hootform free with unlimited responses?
Yes. Both have unlimited forms and submissions on the free plan, within each one's fair use policy. Both show a small badge on free forms.
What's the main difference between Tally and hootform?
