Question types
An email address, checked as it's typed and encrypted when stored.
Ask for an email address to follow up with someone, send them a result, or match a response to a customer.
Settings
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Placeholder | Grey text in the empty field. "[email protected]" if you leave it blank. |
What respondents see
A single-line field that brings up the email keyboard on phones. If what they type doesn't look like an email address, they see "Enter a valid email address." and can't continue until it does.
hootform checks the address looks right; it doesn't send anything to it, so it can't tell whether the inbox exists.
The answer
Stored as typed, with spaces trimmed from either end.
- CSV and emails: the address.
- Webhooks:
"value": "[email protected]". - Encryption: always encrypted when the form is, since an email address identifies someone.
- AI: never sent to an AI model, by AI insights or anything else.
In logic
is, is not, contains, doesn't contain, is answered, is not answered. "Contains" can match a domain, such as sending anyone whose address contains @yourcompany.com to an internal question.
Tips
- Recall the address later in the form, say on the ending: "We'll send your results to {{answer:…}}". See Answer recall.
- To pass an address you already know, use a hidden field instead of asking again.
