Question types
Short text
A single line of free text, for names, job titles, short answers and anything else that fits on a line.
The everyday question: "What's your name?", "Which company are you with?", "What's one word for your experience?".
Settings
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Placeholder | Grey text in the empty field. "Type your answer…" if you leave it blank. |
| Character limit | The most a respondent can type. Without one, answers can be up to 10,000 characters. |
What respondents see
A single-line field, underlined, in the form's heading font. Pressing Enter moves on. If there's a character limit, a counter shows how many are left as they type.
The answer
Stored exactly as typed, with spaces trimmed from either end.
- CSV and emails: the text.
- Webhooks:
"value": "Sam Rivera". - Insights: counts how many people answered. Read the answers themselves in the responses table, or use AI insights to find the themes.
Short text isn't encrypted, so you can search and read it freely. If you're asking for something identifying, use a dedicated type where there is one: Email, Phone number, Link.
In logic
is, is not, contains, doesn't contain, is answered, is not answered. Comparisons ignore upper and lower case.
Dig deeper
Short text can get an AI follow-up question when an answer is too vague to be useful, for example "fine" in answer to "How was onboarding?".
